BEFORE THE START OF THE WORLD SERIES IN ANAHEIM LAST FALL, MIKE Scioscia, manager of the Angels, was talking about a formidable adversary. "Barry Bonds," he said of the Giants' focused power hitter, "has had the best two seasons--this year and last year--in the history of baseball."
Scioscia was coveting a lot of ground with that statement, but he could be excused for delving in hyperbole because Bonds was unquestionably the majors' most dominant offensive force in 2001 and 2002.
