The powers that be, namely Major League Baseball said the Minnesota Twins shouldn't be allowed to continue. They claimed the Twins wouldn't be a viable franchise; didn't have a big payroll, and so couldn't realistically hope to compete for a post-season spot.
The flaw in this type of reasoning has since become all too obvious because the reasoning was based on contractions.
