Pregnancy in women with cystic fibrosis has relatively little effect on maternal health if the patient is in good general condition before pregnancy, a retrospective study has shown.
The study included 75 women with cystic fibrosis (CF) who became pregnant between 1980 and 1999 and a group of nonpregnant women with the disease. The variation in prepregnancy and post-pregnancy pulmonary function in women with CF was compared with function measures at the same intervals in controls. No significant differences were seen between groups, reported Dr. Dominique Gullet of the Universite de Bretagne Occidentale in Brest, France, and her colleagues.
However, before pregnancy, the women who went on to become pregnant had a better pulmonary status and a higher body mass index, compared with controls.
