Breast-feeding-while beneficial for many reasons-may not protect children from developing allergies or asthma, reported Dr. Malcolm Sears of McMaster University, Hamilton, Ont., and his colleagues.
A group of 1,037 children were enrolled in the study at birth and assessed within a month of their birthdays on 10 occasions, spaced at least 2 years apart, between ages 3 and 26 (Lancet 360[9337]: 901-07, 2002).
