Women with low folate levels are at greater risk for spontaneous abortion than women with normal or high levels, said Dr. Lena George of the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, and her associates.
A population-based, case-control study compared plasma folate levels in 468 women who had spontaneous abortions after 6-12 weeks of pregnancy with those of 921 controls (JAMA 288[15]:1867-73, 2002).
Women with low folate levels (2.19 ng/mL or lower) were significantly more likely to have spontaneous abortions than those with adequate folate levels (2.20-3.95 ng/mL)--an adjusted odds ratio of 1.47.
