A three-way dash for the Winston Cup championship is heating up with 15 weeks left in the Winston Cup season. Teammates Dale Jarrett and Ricky Rudd are running second and third in their Fords, chasing three-time Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon, who drives a Chevrolet.
How evenly matched are these drivers? Consider this: At least one of them has a win at nine of the remaining 15 tracks. In handicapping the field, we'll include a dark horse because ... well, that's racing.
Jeff Gordon: We're seeing the Gordon who won 40 races during 1995-98--he has led nearly 28 percent of all the laps run this year. His closest competitor is Rusty Wallace, who has led fewer than 8 percent.
That dominance is significant because it's hard to wreck when you're running out front. Jarrett, who was involved in a wreck while he was charging from 37th at Pocono, will tell you that. Had Jarrett qualified near the front, he might have avoided the accident and the DNF it produced. Gordon was leading and watched the sheet metal fly in his rear-view mirror.
Gordon's pit crew routinely gives him sub-15-second stops, which makes chasing him all the more daunting, especially when a driver has to finish ahead of him to gain ground in the standings. Engine trouble seems to be the only thing that could stop Gordon's march to the title.
Believe in omens? The Brickyard winners from 1998-2000 also won Cup titles those years. Gordon won the Brickyard last weekend. Odds: 3-2.
Dale Jarrett: Jarrett is tied with Gordon for the most victories (four) this season, and he has shown he is unwilling to take a back seat to anyone.
