SAN DIEGO -- Restylane is significantly more effective than Zyplast for the correction of nasolabial folds, results from a randomized, evaluator-blind, multicenter trial suggest. Furthermore, the longevity of Restylane is superior to that of Zyplast, Dr. Andrew Frankel reported at the annual fall meeting of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Restylane is an injectable nonanimal stabilized hyaluronic acid for use as dermal filler in the treatment of cutaneous contour deformities. It has been approved for use in Europe since 1996 and is used in 54 markets around the world, but Restylane is not currently approved for clinical use in the United States. The product, which is manufactured by the Swedish company Q-Med, has been submitted to the United States Food and Drug Administration for review.
For the trial, 138 patients at six independent testing sites nationwide who had a moderate degree of depth to the nasolabial folds were treated with Zyplast on one side of their face and Restylane on the other, said Dr. Frankel, a facial plastic surgeon ...
