A few years back, A's general manager Billy Beane and director of player personnel J.P. Ricciardi engaged in a mock draft at the All-Star Game, with Mariners G.M. Pat Gillick serving as judge. The exercise was standard operating procedure for Beane and Ricciardi, two of the game's leading architects.

Beane and Ricciardi have been debating the merits of players since they were minor league teammates with the Mets in the early 1980s. Back then, they would argue about John Elway and Dan Marino. Now, along with Ks assistant general manager Paul DePodesta, they're outwitting the rest of baseball.
