The United States dealt a blow to its European allies when it decided to postpone the official announcement of the road map plan during the Washington meeting of the quartet committee on the Middle East last Friday [20 December].

US Secretary of State Colin Powell said the postponement decision was justified in light of the Israeli government's viewpoint that announcing the plan at this time contradicts with the Israeli election campaign. Powell argued that due to the Israeli elections and to the wide range of topics the Israeli public is facing, it would be better to keep working on the road map pending completion …
