Maybe you've seen it plastered on the wall of a high school locker room. Or on the back of a peewee football coach's T-shirt.
"Offense wins games, defense wins championships."
It's a fundamental principle, but even NFL teams sometimes overlook it.
For most of the 2001 season, the Raiders were a Super Bowl front-runner. Led by Rich Gannon, Tim Brown and Jerry Rice, they had the offensive firepower and veteran leadership to keep up with any team.
But there was nothing the offense could do when the defense collapsed down the stretch and the Raiders squandered home-field advantage in the playoffs.
Fixing the defense was a no-brainer among the club's offseason projects. Now, after revamping the unit in the offseason, the Raiders might have a defense that's strong enough to match their championship-caliber offense.
Defensive line: Because of the one-year suspension of Darrell Russell and the free-agent loss of Grady Jackson, many people thought the Raiders were weakened at tackle. In fact, Oakland has upgraded its interior line. Russell never made enough plays to justify the distractions he created, and Jackson took plays off and wore down in games.
