GOING DOWN SWINGING: OF Jeff DaVanon was optioned to Class AAA Salt Lake and replaced by OF Julio Ramirez. DaVanon homered, singled and drove in four runs one day before his demotion but was hitting .167 and often appeared overmatched at the plate. Ramirez was hitting .272 with one homer and six RBIs at Salt Lake. Manager Mike Scioscia says the move was made to give DaVanon a chance to get more at-bats while giving Ramirez an opportunity to be the righthanded bat off the bench the club needs. Ramirez, who was claimed off waivers from the White Sox just before the end of spring training, once stole 71 bases in a minor league season.... IF Benji Gil (sprained ankle) and 1B/DH Shawn Wooten (thumb surgery) are making progress. Gil is traveling with the team and participating in workouts. He has started to take ground balls and will begin hitting soon. He'll go on a rehab assignment within the next two weeks. Wooten will probably need another month before he is ready to go on a rehab assignment.
SCOUTING REPORT: LHP Scott Schoeneweis has added a changeup but still depends heavily on his sinker. If hitters swing at the sinker, Schoeneweis is successful, getting ground balls. If hitters lay off the pitch, he falls behind in the count and is forced to throw his fastball in the strike zone, winch often gets hit hard. Schoeneweis gives up his share of hits but usually keeps his team in the game. He needs good defense behind him and a solid showing from the offense to be successful because he rarely shuts opponents down.--Joe Haakenson
