Every season has its surprises. The game would be boring without them. If we want to be bored, we'll join the Rotary Club. If we want anything from baseball, we want to be shocked, bemused, befuddled. We want to wonder how we didn't see that one coming. Give us an amazing start by a rookie (Kazuhisa Ishii) or the rejuvenation of a veteran (Livan Hernandez, Kenny Lofton). Give us bad starts by great teams (Cardinals) and great starts by bad teams (Reds).

Give us a team that overachieves. Give us ... the Reds? Seriously, what the beck is going on in Cincinnati? Weren't the Reds supposed to be awful?
