Being cited for "reaching" is a violation on a basketball court and an admonition at the dinner table. But in an NFL draft room, it is a nasty, harsh criticism.
The criticism isn't always fair. Some teams--take the Colts and their selection of Dwight Freeney with the 11th pick--get beaten up for reaching based on the criteria of others. Stretching for the salt shaker might constitute a reach for everyone at the table except the person closest to it.
"You like to pick as many good players as you can," Colts coach Tony Dungy says. "But even if people don't think they are first-rounders, if they play like first-rounders for you, that's all that matters."
