The Red Sox are better than people thought. They're happy, they're healthy, much improved defensively, more balanced offensively. One scout predicts, "I think they can stay with the Yankees all season."

Well, the Yankees' rotation is deeper than the Red Sox's, and their bullpen also is superior. But the Red Sox should be no worse than wild-card contenders--and that's the least they should have expected going into the season, considering their payroll is $108 million.

"We're as good as any other team," ace Pedro Martinez says. "Whoever you want to pick for first, that's fine. We'll be right there."
