DENVER -- Women who have had at least one previous abortion were no more likely to have been using contraception than those presenting for a first abortion in a study of 301 women seeking second-trimester abortions.
Since virtually all women undergoing abortion receive counseling about contraception and are offered contraceptive options, investigators had hoped to find that the 111 women who had already had an abortion were more likely to have been using birth control--even if it failed--than the 190 women seeking their first abortions.
However, most women in both groups reported using no contraception at the time they became pregnant, Dr. Ashlesha Patel of the University of Illinois, Chicago, reported at the annual meeting of the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals.
"It's frustrating that women who came back for a repeat abortion had contraceptive practices no different than women having an abortion for the first time. There is something about this group of women we're not getting to," Dr. Patel said during an interview.
