DENVER -- Researchers have devised a family planning method that uses colored beads to alert women to the most fertile points in their menstrual cycles.
CycleBeads, when used in conjunction with abstinence on fertile days, were associated with a 5% 1-year pregnancy rate in a study of 478 women and more than 4,035 cycles.
Among all study participants, even those who had unprotected intercourse during days identified as fertile by CycleBeads, the 1-year pregnancy rate was 12.
That "typical use" pregnancy rate is roughly comparable to condom use, considerably better than using a diaphragm or spermicides, and significantly better than chance, which results in a 1-year pregnancy rate of about 85, said Victoria Jennings, Ph.D., professor of ob.gyn. at Georgetown University, Washington, and coinvestigator in the efficacy study of the bead-based Standard Days Method (Contraception 65[5]:333-38, 2002).
"This is a good method for people who for religious reasons prefer to use natural family planning, and also for people who don't want to take hormones and don't want to have surgery" or an invasive procedure, she said in an interview.
The method is best for couples in a monogamous relationship, since it does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases.
But for couples willing to use condoms or abstinence some days of the month, the regimented method appears to be quite effective, she said.
