SAN ANTONIO -- Women with stronger-than-average bones have a twofold increased risk of breast cancer, based on a case-control study of 418 women.
The increased risk is large enough to warrant screening women for their bone density and then making recommendations about breast cancer monitoring based on the results, Dorothy A. Nelson, Ph.D., said in a poster presentation at the annual meeting of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.
Women at higher risk of breast cancer may need more frequent mammography examinations.
