Breast self-exam didn't cut ca mortality in study. (Farequency of Screening Unknown).
Breast self-exams did not reduce a woman's risk of dying from breast cancer in a large decade-long study conducted in China.
After 10-11 years of follow-up, death rates from breast cancer were not significantly different between 132,979 women who were taught breast self-examination (BSE) techniques and 133,085 control women who were not taught the techniques (4% vs. 4.5%).
Although there is no reason to discourage women from performing BSE, those who do self-exams are increasing their odds of undergoing breast biopsies for benign tumors, said Dr. David B. Thomas of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, and his colleagues.
According to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, there is insufficient evidence to recommend for or against the teaching of BSE. The American Cancer Society recommends that women perform BSE monthly beginning at age 20.
In the study, women in the instruction group practiced BSE under supervision at a clinic an average of 12 times during the first 4-5 years. They were encouraged to practice BSE ...
