SAN DIEGO -- Inflammation or injury to one organ in the pelvis may affect the activity of nearby organs, including the uterus, and could contribute to conditions such as chronic pelvic pain, Dr. Karen Berkley said at a meeting sponsored by the International Pelvic Pain Society.
In a phenomenon known as viscerosomatic convergence, a single neuron in the spinal cord or gracile nucleus can react to stimulation of the colon, bladder, uterus, cervix, or vagina, Dr. Berkley said.
This multisystem convergence occurs in many areas throughout the central nervous system and normally helps coordinate the activities of the urinary digestive, and reproductive systems.
Such convergence may also affect the signs and symptoms of pelvic organ pathology said Dr. Berkley of the neuroscience program at Florida State University, Tallahassee.
