SAN ANTONIO -- The ovaries of postmenopausal women may play an important role in preventing osteoporosis and fractures.
In a study of 338 postmenopausal women who underwent bilateral oophorectomy and were followed for an average of 16.6 years, the risk of osteoporotic fractures was 50% higher than the expected community rate, Dr. L. Joseph Melton reported at the annual meeting of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.
"These data are consistent with prior reports and suggest that bilateral oophorectomy can lead to a critical drop in otherwise low estrogen levels, leading to increased bone turnover and an increased fracture risk," according to Dr. Melton, who is a professor of epidemiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
The study was done as part of the Rochester Epidemiology Project, which has prospectively collected medical information on many residents of Olmsted County, Minn., where Rochester is located.
