SAN DIEGO -- Bilateral oophorectomy in women undergoing a hysterectomy for endometriosis or chronic pelvic pain has no additional impact on sexual function, postoperative pain, or quality of life, Dr. Richard Marvel reported.
This finding refutes the conventional wisdom that oophorectomy is a necessary remedy for chronic pelvic pain associated with endometriosis, he said at a meeting sponsored by the International Pelvic Pain Society.
"Hysterectomy has already been established as an effective way of relieving chronic pelvic pain. We asked if taking the ovaries would improve the results any further," said Dr. Marvel, who is an assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive medicine at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
