There are few driver/crew chief relationships with staying power in Winston Cup.

Because crews work under such extreme pressure, partnerships are tested time and again during the course of a 36-race season. Add in the testing and car-building between seasons, and it's understandable why so many alliances melt down.

Jimmy Makar, whose eight seasons with Bobby Labonte mark the longest current driver/crew chief relationship in Winston Cup, is a definite anomaly among crew chiefs. "We've become good friends off the racetrack," Makar says, "and it helps us get through the tough times when things aren't working the way we want."
