Because crews work under such extreme pressure, partnerships are tested time and again during the course of a 36-race season. Add in the testing and car-building between seasons, and it's understandable why so many alliances melt down.
Jimmy Makar, whose eight seasons with Bobby Labonte mark the longest current driver/crew chief relationship in Winston Cup, is a definite anomaly among crew chiefs.
