So, your rookie star is slumping. Now what? Let's take a look at some kids and their prognoses for the rest of the season.
Hank Blalock, 3B, Rangers. He lost his job to Herbert Perry after 33 strikeouts in 100 big-league at-bats but is batting close to .370 at Class AAA. He'll be back soon.
Sean Burroughs, 36, Padres. A sore right shoulder could keep him out three months. He still looks like a young George Brett, but he won't be any help in 2002.
Morgan Ensberg, 3B, Astros. He lost his job to Geoff Blum. Ensberg can hit, but Houston probably won't give him another chance unless he gets hot at Class AAA.
Toby Hall, C, Devil Rays. He looked overweight in spring, and his bat has been cold. But some hard work at Class AAA could make him Tampa's starter within two months.
Nick Johnson, DH, Yankees. He's underachieving, but the Yanks should keep playing him. Don't expect big 2002 numbers, but in three years he could be Jason Giambi II.
Austin Kearns, RF, Reds. He's losing favor because of a sore thumb and a 7-for-44 skid. Despite the problems, expect final numbers of .285, 22 homers and 70 RBIs.
