In the not-so-distant past, teams generally used speedy center fielders or nimble middle infielders to bat leadoff. But when the Diamondbacks met the Giants in a National League West showdown last week, each club led off with a third baseman who never will be confused with Rickey Henderson.

Craig Counsell, with 18 career stolen bases, was batting first for the Diamondbacks in place of Tony Womack, who was dropped in the order May 13. David Bell, with 14 career steals, was continuing his run as the Giants' replacement for Tsuyoshi Shinjo, who flopped batting leadoff in April.
