For the first time in his 20 seasons as an NBA coach, the Heat's Pat Riley found himself on the outside looking in at the start of this year's playoffs. He also finds himself with a lottery pick for the first time, the No. 10 spot in the June 26 draft. After taking a month away from the game, Riley, 57, recently returned to his office at AmericanAirlines Arena and spoke to TSN correspondent Ira Winderman about a Heat season gone sour and a future that he insists could include several more seasons on the sideline.
TSN: So what does Pat Riley do when he suddenly finds himself with nothing but free time at the close of the season?
PR: It was so early, there was so much time, it was still in April. I went to a parents' weekend and have been doing family things. I think we all had to step back, reflect on the season. If you win a championship or if you have a positive ending, you would do the same thing. You would reflect, you would enjoy it a little hit more, and you'd take some time off. It shouldn't be any different when you go through what we went through here. The worst thing I could have done was to get so crazy with anxiousness and demand that everybody get started immediately with film and creating new offenses. I would have driven everybody crazy.
TSN: But on lottery Sunday, certainly you were glued to the television, weren't you?
PR: (Heat owner) Micky Arison and myself were on his boat. We were moored in Lisbon, Portugal, trying to get the game and the lottery on Orbit Satellite, which is a satellite system out of Dubai. And, no, we didn't get it. Micky was on the speakerphone, and he called (his son) Nick. And so Nick was giving us the play-by-play long distance on exactly what was going on.
TSN: You're not exactly known for playing rookies, but this upcoming pick is particularly significant, isn't it?
PR: Are we looking for a starter here? We hope so. Are we looking for a rotation player? Boy, we better. If he's not in the rotation, then we missed. Somebody behind us is probably going to be better, and we're going to be reminded of that. I'm going to be at every single workout that I can be at, without a doubt, for anybody that we're going to pick at 10. We're not going to pick anybody at 10 that I haven't seen.
