PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Jason Williams, Duke

There was so much so right about this picture: Jason Williams returns to college basketball, returns to Duke, though the culture of the sport all but demands he abandon both to become a top NBA draft pick.

He scores 38 points in beating Kentucky, 34 in destroying Maryland, 37 in his final game at Cameron Indoor Stadium against those hated North Carolina Tar Heels.

His Blue Devils win 31 games, claim the ACC Tournament championship and enter the NCAA Tournament with a No. 1 seed.

But ouch, that ending.

The season that gained Williams the award as THE SPORTING NEWS Player of the Year ended at the free-throw line against Indiana. Williams missed a free throw that allowed the Hoosiers to advance to the Elite Eight. It ended with Williams in tears.
