Claire loved the clear blue skies of autumn, the brilliant reds, oranges and yellows of the leaves. And, at last, a drop in the intolerable humidity of the Tokyo summer had come. When she developed headaches, nausea, and felt tired all the time, she attributed the symptoms merely to premenstrual syndrome (PMS). However, when she still felt ill long past her period, she sought another explanation.
With a friend, she looked for recent changes in her lifestyle. Sure enough, they found one; Claire had begun to use a kerosene heater to warm her small apartment, and had been keeping the windows closed to block drafts. She had early signs of carbon monoxide poisoning.
