The radical right-wing Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) is holding the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to ransom by threatening to split Hindu votes in Gujarat unless the BJP kowtows to its demand.

The VHP wants the inclusion of a large number of its cadres to be nominated as official BJP nominees for the next month's Gujarat state assembly polls in a bid to control the party from the inside.

According to BJP sources, the VHP has demanded that one-third of the BJP candidates for the 182-member Gujarat assembly should be its nominees, failing which not only will the VHP not canvass support on the ground for …
