Sofia, 14 November: The first meeting on a southeast Europe electricity market will be held on 15 November in Athens. It will be attended by the energy ministers of the countries of the region. They will sign a Memorandum of Understanding on creating a regional electricity market in Southeast Europe and its integration into the EU energy market. The document has been drawn up on the initiative of the European Commission and approved by the Council of Ministers.
Albania, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Croatia and Yugoslavia will be represented at the forum. Italy and Hungary will take part as observers. Moldova also expressed a wish to receive observer status during the visit of Stability Pact Special Coordinator Erhard Busek to Chisinau on 11 November.
The project for setting up a local energy market enjoys the support of the EU and of the Stability Pact for Southeast Europe, as well as of the US and Canadian initiatives for the region.
