In a landmark 1972 statement, the National Association of Black Social Workers (NABSW) declared its opposition to transracial adoption. It called the practice of placing black children in white adoptive families "a blatant form of racial and cultural genocide." The NABSW cited, as reasons for their position, concerns that the practice isolated children from their racial and cultural identity, and would leave them unprepared to live in a racist society.
