KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 9 (Bernama) -- Malaysia feels that the success of post-conflict reconstruction of Afghanistan lies in the ability of the government of President Hamid Karzai to establish security, restore good governance, which includes the rule of law, and create economic opportunities.
Malaysia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Tan Sri Hasmy Agam told the plenary of the 57th session of the world body's general assembly in New York on Friday that failure to achieve these objectives could lead to fragmentation and the re-emergence of extremism which could once again invite external interference.
Given the enormity of the problems faced by Afghanistan and of their complexity, he suggested that that a comprehensive or holistic approach be taken in tackling the post-conflict situation there as apposed to a piecemeal approach.
He said it was important for the transitional government of President Karzai to assert its authority and provide security to the rest of Afghanistan, not just around Kabul.
