I went to the Oak Lawn yesterday afternoon and lay on the pink linen tablecloth with my head on a cushion I had brought from the house. It was a magnificent day, a full summer day. There was a clear sky and it was hot.
I chose a spot near an oak which had been planted by Lady Loch in 1889. The tree is grand and huge, its girth perhaps five metres, and the knotted protuberances of the base cover a huge area.
