IN OCTOBER 1966, the first Australian Reconnaissance Platoon was formed in Vietnam. The recce men were basically grunts, explains Robert Kearney in his recent book with Peter Haran, Crossfire, "infantrymen who grunted and whinged everywhere they went. The grunt was the frontline soldier, the combatant." This was the kind of serviceman Kearney wanted to be. "I always figured if I went into the Army I wanted to be a soldier, up the sharp end, closing with the enemy ... I didn't join the Army to prop up a desk. I wanted adventure."
