During final exam week, my young daughter came down with croup. She was so weak and sick that the doctor sent her immediately to the hospital, where she was put into a cage-like crib with a tent over the top to administer oxygen and medication. I called my husband at work to negotiate: he had to go to daycare and pick up the baby, go to school and administer my final exam while holding our six-month-old infant, and then come to the hospital. It was a stressful day for all of us, but I remember being relieved that I hadn't let my family crisis prevent my students from taking their exams. -Debra Swanson
