With the Department of Education's Commission on Opportunity in Athletics conducting four hearings around the country on the fairness of Title IX, the October hearing in Colorado Springs brought out different viewpoints.
"About the only thing everyone's agreed on is that Title IX will not be abandoned," concluded Commissioner Graham Spanier, president of Pennsylvania State University. Most women backing gender equity in athletics support Title IX as is, and suggest better enforcement of it. Others said the law needs tinkering:
* Some said the enforcement of Title IX was flawed because it fails to take into the account the realities of intercollegiate athletics. Response: "There is much fat that can be trimmed from many athletics departments."
* Some said males being more willing to walk on to teams proves more interest in athletics. Response: "Historically, because of the status and exceptional treatment of football players and other traditionally successful sports at some schools, male athletes are willing to walk on to a team because of those benefits."
* Some said trends to cut non-revenue sports would hurt the United States in future Olympics. Response: "Title IX is linked to education," not preparing U.S. ...
