Melbourne's Royal Women's Hospital (RWH) is participating in an international study to investigate a vaccine that could prevent certain types of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection associated with over 70% of cervical cancers.
HPV is one of the least known, but most common sexually transmitted viruses in young adults between the ages of 16-28.
Infection with certain types of HPV can lead to genital warts and cervical dysplasia, which in a small proportion of women may lead to cervical cancer. It is estimated that over 50% of sexually active adults will become infected with HPV during their lifetime.
