When it's time for Winston Cup's top 10 drivers to take the stage at Friday's awards banquet in New York, there will be one notable omission. Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s name will not be called.
For Earnhardt, there will be no practicing with the TelePrompTer at the dress rehearsal, no enthusiastic applause and no stilted acceptance speech reviewed and approved by NASCAR.
Simply put, Earnhardt's 11th-place points finish--on the outside of the top 10 looking in--is unacceptable. Unacceptable to his fans. Unacceptable to his team. Unacceptable to the driver.
