No one is quite sure who Franz Grill was or where he came from; it is certain that he was not native to Hungary, though he pursued his musical career and made his modest reputation there, and it is certain that he died in 1792 while working as a butler and manservant in the city of Sopron, near Vienna. He was approximately thirty-six years old when he died, making him a direct contemporary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, to whom his string quartets owe a clear debt.
