THE exclusion of Sinn Fein from a government grant to help the party fight elections was described in court yesterday as "blatant discrimination".

The charge was made by a lawyer at the opening of a judicial review in the High Court in Belfast challenging the decision of the Electoral Commission not to award Sinn Fein a grant of pound sterling100,000.

The SDLP, UUP and DUP qualified for a grant because they have at least two MPs at Westminster.

But Sinn Fein was excluded because their four MPs refused to comply with a second condition for eligibility - taking an oath of allegiance …
