If the dawn of the current season had been any more disastrous for members of the Big East Conference, they'd be looking at fire kind of quick cancellation that shoved Push, Nevada into pop-culture oblivion.
In its first five games against major-conference opponents, the Big East won all but five. It was left to league favorite Pittsburgh to reclaim a small measure of respectability by beating perennial Atlantic 10 doormat Duquesne in Game No. 6.
The most significant obstacle for the Big East, though, is not that it stumbled at the start. The greater problem is the league might not have given itself ample opportunity to recover.
