SCOUTING REPORT
ERNIE CONWELL, TE, RAMS
6-2, 265 Age: 30
STRENGTHS: A fluid athlete who does a nice job of getting a clean release off the line of scrimmage. Can find the soft spot in zone coverage and knows how to get open quickly. Runs sound routes. Rarely drops a ball thrown in his area. Has good strength as a receiver and power as a runner. Is versatile enough to get some short-yardage carries and will pick up the tough yards after contact, Has adequate straight-line speed. Takes good angles to blocks and can change direction quickly. Will consistently block the moving target and does a nice job of sealing off the linebacker at the second level. A hard worker who plays with great intensity and works to finish the block.
WEAKNESSES: He's short for a tight end, which limits him as a target in the red zone. Not very elusive after the catch and will rarely turn a short gain into a big play. As a blocker, lacks ideal bulk and struggles with bigger defensive ends. Has had some problems staying healthy, so durability is a concern.
BOTTOM LINE: Conwell, who has bounced back nicely from a career-threatening knee injury in 1998, no longer has great speed but does all of the little things right and understands his role in the Rams offense. He never has been a dominant in-line blocker and almost plays like an H-back in St. Louis' schemes. He often goes in motion to create better blocking angles, and he also gets some short-yardage carries to keep opposing defenses off balance. As the Rams' offense has become more tight end friendly, Conwell's quickness, toughness and hands have become more evident. His experience in the system and versatility make him a key member of one of NFL's top offenses. --The War Room
