Penn State. Despite its return to the national rankings after two losing seasons, Penn State, 9-3, still must be wondering what might have been. The Nittany Lions' three losses--to Iowa, Michigan and Ohio State--were by a combined 16 points.
Kansas State. KSU proved last year's 6-6 mark was just a blip. With the nation's No. 1 defense and the emergence of quarterback Ell Roberson, the 10-2 Wildcats outscored their last five opponents, 253-30. The losses (Colorado, Texas) came by a total of seven points.
TCU. Without LaDainian Tomlinson and Dennis Franchione, TCU finished 6-6 last season. Then quarterback Casey Printers left. But the team, 8-2, has overcome a banged up and spotty offense thanks to freshman running back Lonta Hobbs and the nation's No. 2 defense.
