Comparing today's leaders with those of a generation ago, observers find the role has changed substantially.
Today successful leaders must make connections, involve various constituencies in decision-making, help others create knowledge and maximize opportunities for all.
Complex new roles call for complex training. Bradley University IL recently piloted an innovative graduate seminar as an elective. Dr. Jenny Tripses, chair of Bradley's educational leadership and human development department, described it at the Women in Educational Leadership Conference held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in September.
Understanding interrelationships
The seminar integrates concepts of social justice, diversity and collaboration into coursework and practicum experiences for students in Bradley University's graduate programs in counseling, educational administration and human service administration.
"Spirituality, Leadership and Justice" was designed to help students understand the relationships between those three constructs and their own leadership.
Taught using a "connected knowing" environment, it encourages participants to open themselves to receive another's experience. "Students and teacher engage in a 'grand experiment' to discover the connection between the three constructs," Tripses said.
