One of the most outspoken advocates for women and a sponsor of the 1972 Title IX law banning gender discrimination in federally funded educational programs, Rep. Patsy T. Mink (D-Hawaii) died September 28 at the age of 74 of viral pneumonia.
In her honor, both the Senate and House of Representatives have passed legislation to rename the Title IX amendments the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act.
