Miles Brand, the president of Indiana University who two years ago had the courage to fire controversial basketball coach Bobby Knight, will take over as president of the NCAA on January 1, 2003.

Before moving to Indiana in 1994, Brand was president of the University of Oregon and held academic positions at these universities: Ohio State, Arizona, Illinois at Chicago and Pittsburgh.

His selection comes at a time when the NCAA is battling the perception of collegiate athletics as: over-commercialized, ...
