A female former employee at Georgetown University DC won a federal jury award of more than $1 million due to sexual harassment by Earnest W. Porta Jr., who is now the school's acting VP and treasurer.
Monica Estes was fired as cash manager at Georgetown in December 1996, after she complained of a hostile environment. She claimed Porta often made sexually suggestive comments about female employees, denied her promotions and added responsibilities once she became pregnant and a mother, and failed to reprimand male employees who made sexual remarks in her presence.
In September, a federal jury awarded her $40,000 in compensatory damages, $50,000 in back pay and $1 million in punitive damages, for having to work in a hostile environment and being fired after she complained about it.
