Service learning experiments at four Catholic colleges made the agenda of this year's National Association for Women in Catholic Higher Education (NAWCHE) conference, "Bridging the Divide-Connecting Activism and Academia Through Social Justice."

Held at Santa Clara University CA in July, it was the group's first conference to take place in the West.

Theory takes on substance for participating students in service learning initiatives at Boston College MA, St. John's University NY, Santa Clara University CA and King's College in Wilkes-Barre PA. Faculty may resist taking time from traditional learning methods, but their students absorb and retain more if they've experienced and not just studied. In the words of Confucius:

I hear and I forget.

I see and I remember.

I do and I understand.
