(From Antara - The Indonesian National News Agency)
Jakarta, Dec 1 (ANTARA) - The government in fiscal 2003 will again allocate its fertilizer subsidy of Rp1.315 trillion after for many years this facility has been lifted.
Director General of Farming Infrastructure Development at the Ministry of Agriculture Ato Suprapto said here on Sunday the subsidy is given to enable the farmers to afford the product to achieve national self-sufficiency in food.
The problem now faced by the farmers is their low purchasing power and low productivity of their crops, he said.
Furthermore, he added, the availability of fertilizer has yet to be secured, especially with regard to type, amount, quality, place, time and price.
He said to enable the farmers to secure the fertilizer they need, the government deemed it necessary to provide fertilizer, and later with the House budgetary commission agree on a subsidy for fertilizers to an amount of Rp1.315 trillion.
Actually, Ato said, the total subsidy for urea, phosphate, ZA and compound fertilizer in three years starting in fiscal 2003 as proposed by the government amounted to Rp2.1 trillion.
