Police are bracing for violence in one of Australia's most popular holiday destinations today as thousands of school leavers gather for an annual rite of passage which has already produced stabbings, assaults and about 50 arrests.
Each year about 40,000 school leavers, or "schoolies" as they are nicknamed, descend on the Gold Coast south of Brisbane to celebrate the end of their student days with an orgy of drinking, smoking and sex on the beach.
