Kaohsiung, Dec. 1 (CNA) The head of an economic think-tank on Sunday urged the government to address problems surrounding the development of cross-Taiwan Strait relations by means of economic methods instead of political intervention.

Vincent Siew, chairman of the private Chung Hua Institute for Economic Research, said he hopes that the development of cross-strait relations will return on a basis of economic cooperation with less political interference the better.

Siew, formerly a premier when the Kuomintang was in power, said he expects that cross-strait relations, including the issue of direct transportation links, will become more politically complicated with the approach of the next ROC presidential election, a situation that would run counter to the interests of the country and its people.

In fact, he said, while the rulers in Taiwan are moving toward an ideological dead end, mainland China ...
